BARBARA CAHILL

Barbara Cahill passed away peacefully on Oct. 29, 2014, with her children present. She was 78. She was born on Jan. 11, 1936, in Hull, England, and was one of four children born to Charles and Mary Cunningham. She was orphaned at a very early age and raised by the nuns at a Catholic Convent in England until age 16. She then joined the Royal Air Force where she served for three years. She met and married George and together they had four children and settled in Penn Valley in 1970. She was active in the Penn Valley Fire Department as a traffic controller during the 1970s. During that time, there was a call tree used to gather all volunteers. The phone would ring at all hours of the day, she would call the next person on the list and the community was there to help. Additional memories were of the all night barbecue pit preparation for the rodeo, pies and sandwich-making for the fair and in later years at the thrift store. She was employed at the Grass Valley Group and retired from Ready Springs Union School where she worked as a yard duty attendant and custodian. While at the school, she met lifelong friends that shared laughter and life events along the way. She was an exceptional knitter and enjoyed baking her famous apple squares and pumpkin bread for family and friends. She was an expert shopper and thoroughly loved to travel near and far with both friends and family. Most importantly, she was Queen Mum to her children and grandchildren. She was loving, fearless, generous, giving and an overall amazing woman that kept family at the very center of all that mattered. She is survived by her son Gary (wife Fiona); daughters, Teresa (husband Dan), Wendy (husband Jeff), Marcella (husband Mark); grandchildren, Grant (Gena), Katrina (Craig), Darci, Dexter, Tanner and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Isla and Collette; and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sutter North Hospice, 400 Plumas Blvd., Suite 115, Yuba City, CA 95991. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank her friends for a lifetime of memories and support, the health care workers and volunteers that assisted in her loving care and Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.
