In Memory of Trudy JoAnne Crough Phillips Trudy Crough Phillips, 79, died peacefully in her sleep on June 20, 2025, in Grass valley at Wolf Creek Skilled Nursing Center. Her husband, Bill, and her brother, Tim, were at her side. Trudy was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on June 12, 1946, the second of eight children. Her family moved to Southern California in 1954. Growing up in Anaheim, CA, she attended St. Pius V Catholic School, and Marywood High School. At 16, while in High School, she played first base for the Orange Lionettes, a women’s semiprofessional fast pitch softball team – a 1963 Women’s National Championship Team. As the youngest player in the league, her batting average was nothing to write home about; but her fielding average was .998 - she always claimed it would have been perfect except for a score keeper’s error. After High School, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange Convent, but left before taking her final vows, to pursue a career in healthcare. She earned her B.S. degree in Radiology Technology and worked at St Joseph Hospital, Eureka, CA. Trudy also became a U.S. citizen after her degree. In 1972 she moved across the Country to become the Dean of Students and Athletics Director for St. Joseph’s College, North Windam, Maine. After several years, Trudy returned to California and worked as a Radiologic Technologist at a hospital in San Francisco. There, she met her husband, Bill; they married in 1980 and resided in Sonoma County. While living in Sonoma County, Trudy attended U.C. Davis Medical School and earned her certification as a Physician’s Assistant (PA). Later, she practiced medicine at Sonoma County Community Hospital and served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCSF for 10 years. She was also the forensic examiner and witness for cases involving child abuse; she frequently lectured on the subject at colleges and universities. Trudy and Bill moved to Cedar Ridge in 2002. Here, she continued her work in medicine as a Physician Assistant at Yuba Docs, until her retirement. She was an avid golfer and a longstanding member of the Grass Valley Country Club. Trudy’s was passionate about animals; she and Bill rescued many dogs over the years. Trudy is survived by her husband of 45 years, William Crough Phillips, and her sisters, Lynda (Harry) Attianese, Gail (Steve) Beeman and Lorleen (Greg) Malkoch, her brother Timothy (Gayle) Crough, and many wonderful nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph Wilfred Crough and Anne O’Malley Crough, her sisters Kathleen Galaise, Suzanne Crough Condray, her brother Patrick Crough, and her much loved nephews, Christopher Beeman and Ryan Attianese.
