Gary David Oates

Gary David Oates passed away peacefully at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley California on Wednesday October 26, 2022, at the age of 84. His wife, Louise Elizabeth Oates preceded him in death in 2017. They had been married for 37 years at the time of her passing. Gary was born on June 22, 1938 in San Mateo, California to parents Virgil and Grace Oates. He spent his early years in California before joining the United States Marine Corp. He served his country with distinction as a corporal stationed at various locations around the world. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Gary attended The College of San Mateo where he studied drafting and electrical engineering. He then began his career in Silicon Valley starting at Singer then eventually as an early entrepreneur in the technology industry. He was a pioneer in the field and was featured in Life magazine for his founding of CoData Systems in Los Gatos, California. His work helped shape the industry for what it is today. Gary was a devoted family man and he loved spending time with his wife Louise and his three children. He was also a doting grandfather to his seven grandchildren. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, traveling, and exploring the outdoors. He loved to fish the rivers and lakes of Northern California. In addition to his wife Louise, Gary was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Grace Oates. He is survived by his three children: Jeff (Jen), Jacque (Jim), Traci (Hugh), his brother Dan (Barbara), his grandchildren Corinne, Casey, Cameron, Grace, Mia, Nicole, Taylor as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers who provided exceptional care to Gary in his final days. They would also like to express their gratitude to the many friends and family members who have offered their love and support during this difficult time. A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Cancer Society in Gary’s memory.
